Oily skin is the result of the the oil producing sebaceous glands being overactive and producing more oil than is needed. This results in surplus oil oozing from enlarged pores giving the skin a greasy shine. The excess oil often leads to the development of blackheads and spots and provides nourishment to bacteria that live upon the skin contributing to acne flare ups.
Oily skin is common in teenagers due to the flow of sebum, or oil, increasing during adolescence but it can occur at any age. During pregnancy and menopause, hormonal imbalances can also upset the oil balance and increase the activity of sebaceous glands.
Located deep within the second layer or "dermis" of the skin, these glands are mainly in the face, neck, chest and back, one reason that these areas appear to be affected by oil production the most and most prone to spots and blemishes.
With simple steps, oily skin can be controlled and the risk acne flare ups minimised. Drinking plenty of water and eating a diet rich in protein, fresh vegetables and fruit but low in sugar will have a positive effect on oily skin.
Oily skin needs regular cleansing with plenty of hot water and soap to prevent the pores from becoming clogged. Use oil-based products as they dissolve sebum effectively and avoid harsh products that strip skin of oil as they can cause a reaction known as reactive seborrhoea, where the oil glands work overtime to compensate for the loss of natural oils.
Skincare products that contain chemicals should always be avoided as these cause the upper layers of the skin to shrink making the skin feel tight and restricts oil flow through the pores leading to blockages, spots and blackheads.
