Cellulite is located in the outer layer of fat closest to the skin where fat cells and subcutaneous connective tissue are enclosed in collagen pockets and occurs when these fat cells become too closely packed together and expand so much that they cause the collagen fibres around them to bend.
Because there is little room for lymphatic drainage to relieve this build-up of fluids, fats and toxins, it causes the skin to pucker and dimple, an effect more evident in mature skin which has thinned.
Although there are several possible explanations, nobody is certain why cellulite develops. It is most likely a combination of genetics, lifestyle, age and environment that contribute to cellulite growth and is not necessarily a factor of bodyweight although diet and lifestyle certainly affect cellulite formation as a large part of cellulite is comprised of toxins and fat that build up in the body.
Despite extensive research, there is no cure for cellulite. Until a solution is found, it is possible to take simple and effective steps to reduce it's appearance though such as a combination of regular exercise, eating a healthy diet rich in fibre, avoiding caffeine and drinking lots of water to keep your skin hydrated.
Massaging the affected area regularly has also been found to radically reduce the appearance of cellulite over time as this manipulates the muscles, stimulating the circulatory and lymphatic systems that break down fatty tissue. Massage targets areas that are difficult to stimulate with ordinary exercise (such as the inner knee and upper thigh areas). Try simply massaging each leg in circular movements, kneading the flesh as you go, for a couple of minutes each day to break down fat and get rid of toxins.
The simplest way to massage cellulite is whilst in the shower or bath and we can offer a range of natural, chemical free soaps to lather on making massaging the affected area easier to manage.
